Aliwal

ਅਲੀਵਾਲعلی وال دی لڑائی

British victory on the Sutlej in January 1846.

Aliwal is a village on the Sutlej near Ludhiana. On 28 January 1846 Sir Harry Smith defeated the Sikh force of Ranjodh Singh Majithia here.

The victory was celebrated in Britain, and Smith became a hero.

A memorial obelisk stands near the village.
