Ferozeshah
ਫ਼ਿਰੋਜ਼ਸ਼ਾਹ
Two-day battle of December 1845, among the hardest fought by the British in India.
Ferozeshah, or Pheru Shahr, is a village near Ferozepur. On 21 and 22 December 1845 one of the hardest-fought battles of the British in India took place here, with the Sikh army behind its entrenchments.
The British nearly lost; the Sikh commander Tej Singh withdrew when he could have won. An Anglo-Sikh War Memorial was built here by the Punjab government in 1976, with a museum.
Every December a commemoration recalls the Sikh soldiers who died.
